Community Clothing Program
A Fresh Start
My name is Susan.
Before coming to the CRC Clothing Program, my life had been a mix of ups and downs. I was living with family but also dealing with an alcohol addiction. My addiction had become too much for my family and I was asked to leave my family’s home.
I crashed from friend to friend’s couch. When I had worn out my welcome with my friends and family, I was left with nowhere to go and became homeless. After spending several months living on the streets, I finally ended up seeking refuge in a shelter.
I was asked to leave my first shelter because of my behaviour and alcohol addiction. As I bounced around from shelter to shelter, I finally began to see that my addiction was taking control of my life. When I entered my last shelter, I finally reached rock bottom and began the process of healing and my journey to sobriety.
While in my final shelter, I had heard from residents that there was a clothing program at a place called CRC. I decided to check it out. When I arrived, I was immediately welcomed and treated with such respect. The staff was very welcoming and I, for the first time in a long time, didn’t feel like I was being judged for who I was. To me it seemed they weren’t interested in my past but more interested in who I was today and the steps I was taking to better my life. As I shopped for new clothing items, I was being treated with dignity and grace. The staff was so accommodating and very helpful.
I remained in the shelter for almost over a year and I made several visits to CRC’s Clothing Program. Not only to shop for clothes, but to talk to the staff, and let them know how I was doing and be heard.
Finally I obtained a place to call my own. Since I had no personal household belongings and not much to start with, I came to the clothing program to see what help they could offer. They were so happy to see that I had obtained housing and provided me with everything I needed to start this new chapter in my life.
I am so thankful for the help I received. I am settled into a new home and every time I use my new dishes, I think of the positive experience I had at the CRC Clothing Program.
