Welcoming the Year of the Monkey

Chinese New Year Brother and Sister Dancing GroupOn February 8th CRC celebrated the Year of the Monkey with the Chinese community here in Regent Park. We have had the pleasure of hosting a Chinese New Year event for three years now, and we are glad to see it grow bigger and better each year!

Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year, is a traditional festival to honour deities and ancestors. It is also a time to welcome good luck, fortune and prosperity for the year ahead. For many it is a once-a-year chance to gather together with family and enjoy a special meal together.

Chinese New Year Tian Shu ChoirTaking that theme to heart, our Chinese New Year celebrations started off with our community meal program. We served up a delicious lunch of chicken stir fried rice, green vegetables in chili garlic, and salad with a bowl of hot and sour soup for 255 people.

It was a full house in our drop-in as participants enjoyed performances by two traditional Chinese musical groups from the local community – The Brother and Sister Dancing Group and the Tian Shu Choir. Chinese speakers and non-speakers alike gathered to enjoy these performances, and showed their enthusiasm by clapping and tapping along to the beat of some energetic tunes.

Participants also coloured in pictures of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals, and decorated the room with them.

Chinese New Year Food
After the performances participants were welcomed to try some traditional Chinese snacks! We served egg rolls, chicken dumplings, and spring rolls. This was made possible thanks to generous donations from our event sponsors: Manchu Wok, Wong Wing, and ORC Rolls.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in welcoming the year of the monkey!
