Jannie Mills is a champion of social justice which is reflected in all that she does. CRC’s building, 40 Oaks, would not have happened without some key individuals. One of those is Jannie.
As Chair of the Outreach Committee at St. James-Bond United Church (before it amalgamated with Fairlawn Avenue United Church), Jannie advocated that the proceeds from the sale of the church should go to support several affordable housing projects across Toronto, including the redevelopment of 40 Oaks – a gift of $1.5 million.
Jannie also served on the CRC Board for almost 9 years. There she recruited new members and was the chair of the Human Resources Committee. She also spearheaded the development of the Advocacy Committee to ensure that CRC would be an active and visible agent for social change and social justice.
As a steadfast supporter she has encouraged many members of the Fairlawn Avenue congregation to share their talents and volunteer their time with CRC.
Jannie’s outstanding leadership and her wise counsel have been an invaluable resource for CRC. Her accomplishments are huge and, typical of Jannie, her character modest.
Jannie, because of your tenacity in securing a major financial gift for 40 Oaks in its infancy, for your ongoing work for social justice in this area, for your years of work with the Board of CRC, and for your ability to inspire involvement of members of Fairlawn United Church and others to our common work, we now admit you to the office of Companion of CRC.
